Western Australia's renowned coral reefs have experienced the most extensive bleaching event in recorded history.
A prolonged and intense marine heatwave, lasting from August to May, caused widespread coral bleaching across 1,500km of coastline.
This severe bleaching, often fatal to coral, resulted from warmer waters stressing the coral and causing algae expulsion.
Even previously unaffected reefs like the Rowley Shoals have been significantly impacted, highlighting the urgent need for climate action.
